Legal expert Mike Cavalluzzi tells MTV News he isn’t surprised by sentence but doesn’t think it’s justified.
By Gil Kaufman
<P>Though he dodged a potential four-year prison term, former <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/jackson_michael/artist.jhtml">Michael Jackson</a> physician Conrad Murray was sentenced to an equal amount of time in Los Angeles County Jail on Tuesday (November 29) in the death of the pop singer. </P><P> </P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Michael Jackson Doctor Conrad Murray Sentenced" id="vid:714975.id:1673923" width="240" height="211"></div><p> </P><P> </P><P>But the same overcrowding problems that spared the cardiologist from doing time in a federal pen might also save him from serving his entire sentence in county as well. Shortly after the <a href="/news/articles/1675062/conrad-murray-sentence.jhtml">sentence was handed down</a> by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor, Los Angeles Sheriff spokesman Steve Whitmore told <a href="http://www.eonline.com/news/jackson_family_reacts_conrad_murrays/277336" target="_blank">E! News</a> that Murray would likely end up serving "a little less than two years." Due to overcrowding, most county jail sentences are immediately cut in half, and given the 46 days credit Murray has already been given, he is looking at even less than that. </P><P> </P><P><a href="https://www.facebook.com/mtvnews/posts/199210760161755" target="_blank"><b>Do you think Conrad Murray deserved the maximum sentence? Let us know on Facebook.</b></a> </P><P> </P><P>Murray's lawyers said afterward that they believed the sentence was unnecessarily long. "Yes, of course [Judge Pastor] was harsh. He gave the stiffest penalty he was entitled to give under the law," Murray's attorney, J. Michael Flanagan, told reporters. "He was openly hostile. … [Murray has] led 56 years of exemplary life. He was really dreading [sentencing]. I think anybody would dread going into it. He's an honorable man, and he'll get through this. The family is suffering more than Dr. Murray is. … Dr. Murray is the provider in that family." </P><P> </P><P>Pastor had leeway in the sentencing, with options ranging from probation to the full sentence, but in a lengthy ruling from the bench, he said Murray's lack of remorse and negligent behavior called for the highest possible penalty. "He is and remains dangerous … the request of probation is denied, the court imposes the high term of four years imprisonment in this case," Pastor said during the 90-plus-minute hearing. </P><P> </P><P>Los Angeles-based criminal defense attorney Mike Cavalluzzi told MTV News that he wasn't surprised by the sentencing but that he didn't believe it was justified. Cavalluzzi said Pastor had incentive to give the full sentence because of the prominence of Jackson and his family and to create the perception that he is tough on crime. "He gets that perception by sentencing him to the max while not having to surrender the defendant to the full sentence," said Cavalluzzi, who was not involved in the case. "He gets the self-satisfaction of being perceived as being tough on crime and making the Jackson family happy, but I don't think it was a fair sentence." </P><P> </P><P>Cavalluzzi said when deciding prison versus probation, judges have to look at someone's criminal history and whether a person is likely to complete the terms of their probation, which he believes Murray would. "I'm not seeing aggravating factors here, and I think it was just a chapter in [Murray's] life and he does not have a history of being a mercenary doctor always after money, but of being a good, responsible doctor who was seduced by the celebrity and money that Jackson offered," he said. </P><P> </P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Michael Jackson's Former Doctor Guilty Of Involuntary Manslaughter" id="vid:708788.id:1673923" width="240" height="211"></div><p> </P><P> </P><P>As to why Pastor gave such a dramatic, lengthy explanation for why he was sentencing Murray to the max, Cavalluzzi said the judge has to have a justification for his actions in the public record. "Because he doesn't have the discretion to give a high prison term, [Pastor] has to justify his sentence in the record and have very specific reasons for it. I don't think there's any way that anyone truly believes that from this day forward Dr. Murray truly represents a threat to society. That's just ludicrous." </P><P> </P><P>And while he doesn't agree with the four-year term, Cavalluzzi said the high-profile nature of the case and the glare of the media could have played into the sentence. "It probably gives [<a href="/news/articles/1675068/conrad-murray-sentencing.jhtml">Jackson's family</a>] great comfort to have someone to blame," he said. " 'If not for this awful man, my son, brother, father would be alive.' But it's not fair to do that and it feels like a capitulating judgment in favor of feeding the emotional needs of the family." </P><P> </P><P>Upon leaving the courthouse, Michael's brother Jermaine, when asked if the four-year sentence was enough, shook his head and said, "No." Mother Katherine Jackson told local TV station KTLA, "Four years is not enough for someone's life. It won't bring him back. But at least he got the maximum, and I thought the judge was very, very fair." </P><P> </P><P>The prosecution, however, was satisfied with the ruling. </P><P> </P><P>"We're pleased. That's what we thought was appropriate. The judge obviously agreed with us," deputy district attorney David Walgren said. "It was our position that it was not a simple, one-time mistake; it was a series of mistakes culminating in the abandonment of Michael Jackson when he died … the judge agreed with that sentiment. A brother and a son and a family member was killed, and whatever the sentence may be, the family of the victim deserves justice. And we did everything to bring them that justice." </P><P> </P><P>As for how much time Murray will spend locked up, Cavalluzzi said it is likely to be less than two years and, frankly, he predicted, the doctor could be out even sooner than that. "He might be eligible for house arrest very quickly," he said.</p>

‘This is not an anti-bullying foundation; this is a youth-empowerment foundation,’ Mother Monster says at Harvard launch event.
By Jocelyn Vena
<P><P><a href="/news/articles/1677562/lady-gaga-born-this-way-foundation.jhtml">Lady Gaga and her mother, Cynthia Germanotta</a>, took over Harvard University to launch their <a href="/news/articles/1673633/lady-gaga-born-this-way-foundation.jhtml"><i>Born This Way</i> Foundation</a> on Wednesday (February 29). In front of a crowd that included <a href="/news/articles/1679223/lady-gaga-oprah-winfrey-foundation.jhtml">Oprah Winfrey</a>, the New York natives kicked off their inspirational foundation, hoping to empower the youth of America. </P><P> </P><P>"I was recently with the great Gloria Steinem, who said that sometimes the only way you can get attention to a problem is to freak people out," <a href="http://act.mtv.com/posts/lady-gaga-launches-born-this-way-foundation/">Oprah said at the event</a>." 'Break the form,' she said. You have to stop playing the game in order to change the content. Lady Gaga, with her music and her message and her own story, is breaking the form, and she is changing consciousness. She says that she wasn't put on earth just to sing songs; her passion is to be that force for good. The <i>Born This Way</i> Foundation is in line with so many of my core beliefs." </P><P> </P><P>Gaga enthusiastically opened up about the foundation and what she hopes to do with it. "I just have one thing to say before we get started: We got Oprah! … Thank you from all of us — from my entire team, from my mother, from the bottom of the hearts of so many people who believe in what we're doing today," she said, wearing a chocolate-brown gown, brown lace gloves, towering platforms and a sparkly fishnet hat. </P><P> </P><P>"I'm not here today to give you an answer. And I'm not here to tell you I can solve these problems [of bullying]. This is about transformative change in culture over a period of time. One of the most important things I wanted to share with all of you today, it's no secret I speak out against bullying. This is not an anti-bullying foundation; this is a youth-empowerment foundation," she continued. "This is about changing the climate of the school environment and not putting the power in the hands of the teachers or the government. It is about the bubble effect. I don't believe they have the answers; I believe that you do." </P><P> </P><P>In addition to her fans, Gaga said her biggest influence to start the foundation is her own Mother Monster. "My mother really inspires me, because she talked about giving back ever since I was very, very young," she said. "And the more that I got to know my fans, the more that I realized that not everybody has that support system at home." </P><P> </P><P>Her mother later enthused that despite the snow outside, "It is even more beautiful inside because we are launching the foundation. The youth that is listening: you are the leaders of our future." </P><P> </P><P>Gaga also revealed another aspect of the foundation: "There is a bus now called the Born Brave Bus. So the Born Brave Bus is essentially a bus that is going to travel and follow my tour bus around the country, and it will welcome anyone from any walk of life to come and hang out and talk about love, acceptance, kindness and so forth. And the best thing about it it's going to be fun. It's going to essentially be a tailgate. This is not about saying, 'I need help,' but if you do, you can come. If you want to help someone else, you can come and say 'Hey, what's up?' " </P><P> </P><P>At the end of the day, Gaga said the foundation "is all about saying the power is in your hands. There really is sort of a focus on the victim, but what I want to point out today is that the victim and the bully are on the same playing field. How do we say, 'You are both equal members of society'? How do we not save not just the victim, but also the bully? I want the <i>Born This Way</i> Foundation to empower the youth of the world." </P><P> </P><P>Gaga further explained that one of the core values is teaching her fans to empower themselves to be "brave." </P><P> </P><P>"This, again, is not focused on bullying, the bravery aspect; I want for young people to know they have the power," she said. "How can we inspire young people to know they have the power to be brave?"</p></p>

Couple likely ‘trying to protect what they rightfully own or created,’ family law expert tells MTV News.

"[Seeking the trademark] forestalls competitors from using the child's name and or third parties from attempting to sell the baby's name back to the couple," Ziegler told MTV News. "They are likely trying to protect what they rightfully own or created, shall we say, by trademarking Blue Ivy's name." </P><P> </P><P>The application to trademark Blue Ivy Carter's name, filed by BGK Trademark Holdings (Beyoncé's company) is currently pending but will likely be approved because, as the <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/reliable-source/post/blue-ivy-the-trademark-feds-move-fast-on-rights-to-beyonce-and-jay-zs-babys-name/2012/02/03/gIQAOTDGnQ_blog.html" target="_blank"><i>Washington Post</i></a> reports, parents are legally authorized to trademark the names of their minor children. </P><P> </P><P>"In essence, it's a trademark for a brand, and this brand is expected to be one hot commodity — just look at Blue Ivy's parents," Ziegler said. ‘Welcome to Twitter. You’re still banned from my show,’ Morgan writes to Madonna.
By Gil Kaufman

CNN talk-show host Piers Morgan has not been shy about his feelings about Madonna.
The former “America’s Got Talent” judge has been going in on the singer for months, calling her everything from a “con artist” to “gruesome,” and making fun of her super-toned physique and Super Bowl halftime show.
But on Monday, Morgan escalated the feud, sending a snippy message to Madonna in which he welcomed her to Twitter while smacking her down once again. The “Girl Gone Wild” singer had set up a special Twitter account on Monday in order to chat with her fans and Morgan wrote, “Welcome to Twitter @MadonnaMDNAday -you’re still banned from my show. Love Piers.”
That crossed the line for Madonna’s manager, Guy Oseary, who responded with his own snap-tastic tweet, posting a letter from October 21, 2011, that says Morgan is “delighted to invite Madonna to be a special guest for his L.A. recording of his U.K. chat show — where she would be welcome to promote her new film and forthcoming album release (and perform two numbers).”
Like a demented game of Hollywood power-broker tennis, Morgan fired the ball back, tweeting, “Madonna’s only been banned from my #CNN show @guyoseary – not my UK show, which sent that invite. But I’m now banning her from that too.” And he still wasn’t done! Morgan then banned Oseary from all his shows too, due to what he called “guilt by association.” Morgan has apparently felt slighted over the years by Madonna, especially during his days as an editor at England’s Daily Mirror newspaper, where he claims he was lied to by the singer’s publicist in order to ensure that a rival paper got Madge’s pregnancy announcement.
Morgan caught Madonna on the same day she was finally extinguishing another feud, this one with EDM superstar deadmau5, who had taken the 53-year-old pop icon to task for seemingly making a drug reference during her appearance last weekend at the Ultra Music Festival in Miami.

He’s beloved by millions of teenage girls who already think of him as their “Boyfriend,” and now Justin Bieber‘s edgier track seems poised to be one of the teen star’s biggest hits yet.
According to Billboard, the song, which dropped Monday, could sell upwards of 400,000 downloads in its first week, giving it a big push on next week’s Billboard Hot 100 chart. This would give the singer his best sales week for a song to date in his career.
His biggest thus far belongs to “Never Say Never,” which moved 199,000 downloads in its first week, eventually peaking at #5 on the Digital Songs chart.
Based on the estimates for his Hot 100 debut (which takes into account radio airplay, sales and streaming data), Bieber could land in the top five going into next week. So far, his most ubiquitous track, “Baby,” is also his highest debut on the Hot 100, having landed at #5 in 2010.
It seems that radio is also embracing the lead Believe single. While Bieber has always had a large fanbase and solid record sales, radio airplay has eluded him a bit. But Billboard further reports that this song could land him in a solid place on the Pop Songs top 10 based on early airplay. So far, he’s only managed to land at #14 in 2009 with “One Time” and #16 with “Baby.”
“Boyfriend” was co-produced and co-written by Mike Posner, who explained to MTV News that they always intended to make a song that would shift Bieber’s career from tween heartthrob to legitimate pop star.
“I think our goal was to make something that me and my friends could listen to in the car,” Posner explained. “I think we’ve all known Justin since he was 13, and that’s not the kid I was in the studio with anymore. He’s an 18-year-old. He skateboards with Lil Wayne and hangs out with Lil Twist. Those are his homies. And he listens to hip-hop and he’s a really cool kid. He’s not like a corny guy.”

For ‘Twilight’ Tuesday, we imagine the vampires and wolves in a battle to the death.
By Kara Warner
Taylor Lautner in “Breaking Dawn”
Photo: Summit
Like most of our fellow “Twilight” fans, we spend a lot of time thinking about and overanalyzing the mythical world Stephenie Meyer created and the record-breaking film franchise it spawned. And even though we still have too many months to wait to see “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2,” the wait was made slightly less painful this week due to a couple of new trailer teases.
Since we’ve had the series on the brain more than usual this week, along with the countless stories about “The Hunger Games” reaching “Twilight”-level numbers, I’ve decided to philosophize my way through this week’s “Twilight” Tuesday with the question: If the Cullens and the wolf pack were featured in a “Hunger Games”-style, fight-to-the-death tournament organized by the Volturi (of course), who would come out a victor?
The first thing to address is who would be reaped into the tournament? And how many? If we go with 24, the ranks are difficult to fill out due to a lack of named weres. Nevertheless, here are the contenders (including a few of those who don’t live through the end of the series): Bella Swan, Edward Cullen, Jacob Black, Carlisle Cullen, Esme Cullen, Alice Cullen, Emmett Cullen, Rosalie Hale, Jasper Hale, Renesmee Cullen, Sam Uley, Quil Ateara V, Embry Call, Paul Lahote, Jared Cameron, Leah Clearwater, Seth Clearwater, Collin Littlesea, Brady Fuller, James, Victoria, Laurent, Riley Biers and one of the unnamed wolves from the end of “Breaking Dawn” who show up as part of Sam’s pack. Whew.
Now, who will be defeated and how? My colleague Katie Byrne makes the very astute point that the Cullens are total pacifists and will not kill each other, no matter what. I say that Jasper might be the one to crack, since he doesn’t always have total control over his actions, but the rest of the Cullens will probably rein him in and quarantine him or something. Also, as much as it pains me to admit it, the vampires will likely outlast the werewolves (confession: I prefer wolves to vamps), particularly the Cullens with their supernatural abilities. But again, would the Cullens allow the seemingly needless fights-to-the-death to happen? This is a Volturi-created death match after all, so they might make like the end of “Breaking Dawn – Part 2″ and save everyone. Except for James, Victoria, Laurent and Riley, of course.
Ms. Byrne argues that if the Volturi did somehow succeed in making the tournament end in death and destruction, the Cullens would all join hands, eat a few handfuls of nightlock (assuming that the poisonous berry also works on non-humans), and end the “Games” with a civilized, non-bloody mass suicide. Or the Volturi might recognize the Cullens’ value (just like the Gamemakers did) and let them live — under the constant threat of death and destruction, that is.
Who do you think would win the “Twilight” Hunger Games? Share your thoughts in the comments or tweet me @karawarner with your theories!

<P>On Thursday (January 7), the U.K.'s Royal Mail unveiled a series of 10 new stamps, honoring the most iconic album covers of the past 40 years. </P><P> </P><P>The albums featured in the new series are the <a href="/music/artist/rolling_stones/artist.jhtml">Rolling Stones</a>' <i>Let It Bleed,</i> <a href="/music/artist/led_zeppelin/artist.jhtml">Led Zeppelin</a>'s <i>IV,</i> <a href="/music/artist/bowie_david/artist.jhtml">David Bowie</a>'s <i>The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars,</i> <a href="/music/artist/mike_oldfield/artist.jhtml">Mike Oldfield</a>'s <i>Tubular Bells,</i> <a href="/music/artist/clash/artist.jhtml">The Clash</a>'s <i>London Calling,</i> <a href="/music/artist/new_order/artist.jhtml">New Order</a>'s <i>Power, Corruption and Lies,</i> <a href="/music/artist/primal_scream/artist.jhtml">Primal Scream</a>'s <i>Screamadelica,</i> <a href="/music/artist/pink_floyd/artist.jhtml">Pink Floyd</a>'s <i>The Division Bell,</i> <a href="/music/artist/blur/artist.jhtml">Blur</a>'s <i>Parklife</i> and — the most recent album on to make the cut — <a href="/music/artist/coldplay/artist.jhtml">Coldplay</a>'s <i>A Rush of Blood to the Head.</i> </P><P> </P><P>Meant to honor "the most potent graphic images of modern times, many of which have provided a visual soundtrack to people's lives," the series is the end result of a lengthy research process by the Royal Mail, who looked through thousands of album covers by British artists before deciding on the final list. And, during a Wednesday night BBC Radio broadcast, it was revealed that the queen herself actually approved each design. </P><P> </P><P>Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page — who helped design the cover for <i>IV</i> — was on hand to celebrate the release of the stamps and recalled the mysterious nature of the album's iconic imagery. </P><P> </P><P>"Almost 40 years after the album came out, nobody knows the old man who featured on the cover, nor the artist who painted him," he said. "That sort of sums up what we wanted to achieve with the album cover, which has remained both anonymous and enigmatic at the same time." </P><P> </P><P>Of course, any great honor is befitting of an equally great contest, so, on the same day the stamps were made available to the general public, Coldplay decided to give one of their <i>Rush of Blood</i> stamps away. In a message on their official site, the band held a contest to send one lucky fan "a letter using a Coldplay stamp, postmarked with today's issue date." </P><P> </P><P>"We visited our local post office earlier today and bought some of the Coldplay stamps," the message read. "Very nice they are too."</p>

Gwyneth Paltrow, Reese Witherspoon, Cameron Diaz and Andy Samberg have also been attached to musical comedy.

The pop singer is reportedly in talks to join Ryan Murphy's latest flick. </P><P> </P><P>Billed as "One Hit Wonders," the film would be a musical comedy that could potentially star B's pal Gwyneth Paltrow, as well as Reese Witherspoon, Cameron Diaz and "Saturday Night Live" star Andy Samberg. </P><P> </P><P>The film would follow Paltrow, Witherspoon and Diaz as pop stars who hit it big in the '90s as — you guessed it — one-hit wonders. Samberg and his Lonely Island team would be involved in coming up with the movie's songs. Trying to keep up with his busy schedule, Tom Hardy was in a hurry when he was spotted at LAX International Airport last night (March 26).
The ?Inception? star looked a bit rough with a bushy beard, green t-shirt, and jeans as he carried his luggage past the paparazzi and onto the plane.
In career news, Tom is on the shortlist to replace Mickey Rourke in the upcoming film biography about gay rugby superstar Gareth Thomas, as the training is a bit too much for Rourke at his age.
Thomas told press, “I was talking to Mickey yesterday and basically we’re now talking to other big-name actors who could play the part instead. We had talked about using computer-generated special effects with Mickey but we don’t think that will be as realistic, so it’s time to find someone new.”

Earning $19.8 million at midnight screenings and predictions of a $125 million weekend for “The Hunger Games” have essentially secured a future for the franchise, so now one of the more interesting questions coming out of the opening is: What does this mean for Jennifer Lawrence?
As the star of “The Hunger Games,” Lawrence will inevitably be one of the people given credit for its huge success and, from there, move into the realm of “bankable” actresses. While headlining a huge blockbuster certainly helps bolster an actress’ career prospects and offers for future projects, it will be Lawrence’s incredible performance as Katniss Everdeen that secures her new status as a Hollywood A-lister and bona fide star.
With the now-guaranteed success of “The Hunger Games” under her belt, Lawrence’s next project choices are going to be the ones that decide what kind of star she is, according to David Poland of Movie City News.
“She is going to be on top of the celebrity charts for a few years now, but it’s easy to piss that away with a few bad choices,” he said. “My sense is that she wants to be stimulated and not just take the money and run. So she could end up getting dozens of low-budget, high-quality films made or do ‘one for them, one for me’ or try to be the first Bond villainess. Doors are open. But she’s young, and her identity is still forming.”
Beginning that identity formation with “The Hunger Games” is a pretty solid start. Who didn’t get goose bumps during the trailer when Lawrence broke away from the crowd at the Reaping to volunteer herself for the Games? “I volunteer! I volunteer as tribute.” It’s an incredibly memorable moment, and its resonance stems directly from how emotionally believable Lawrence is. For as contentious as her casting was, Lawrence silenced critics with two sentences.
At its core, “The Hunger Games” is a crowd-pleaser. It follows a strong female character, is full of action and arguably ends with the best possible outcome. There’s a reason so many people of different demographics love it. As the hero of the story, Lawrence automatically becomes the person people associate the quality of the film with, and there’s a good reason for that.
It’s important to remember that when we’re talking about Jennifer Lawrence, we’re talking about “Academy Award nominee Jennifer Lawrence,” an honor she earned for a brutal role in “Winter’s Bone.”
There was never a question that Lawrence could act, and in the actual film of “The Hunger Games,” she grounds a fantastical premise with a relatable and deeply realistic performance that goes beyond the usual requirements of a tentpole movie. Even though we’re barely three months into 2012, based solely on the quality of her performance, Oscar consideration for Lawrence isn’t entirely out of the question: She’s that good.
With “The Hunger Games,” Jennifer Lawrence has left behind the realm of “indie cred” and has entered rarified air: a highly bankable, capital A actor.

Cee Lo appears most moved by his teams’ performances as he breaks into tears during rehearsals.

It’s the final round of face-offs for the contestants of “The Voice.” On Monday night (March 26) the remainder of the aspiring singing superstars dueled it out in the last stage in front of judges Christina Aguilera, Adam Levine, Blake Shelton and Cee Lo Green.
Fans of “The Voice” will begin to have their say in the performance outcomes when the NBC series goes live next Monday.
Team Christina
As one of the night’s most interesting duels, Xtina paired up THE LiNE and Moses Stone to tackle the Rolling Stones’ “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction.” Worried about how they’ll sound, the country twosome tried to take advice from their pop-star judge. “If you’re going to be a career artist, I think you’re going to need to know how to morph into kind of someone else’s energy,” she proclaimed.
Alongside mentor Lionel Richie, Xtina urged Moses to explore his voice and utilize his gift to its full potential. Problems arose over at THE LiNE’s prep time, with Jewel criticizing their “wedding band” similarities. But everyone caught heat during rehearsal time when Xtina called her team out for not using the stage entirely.
Moses sounded like the champion mid-performance when he broke off for an original verse during the performance, but ultimately Adam and Blake favored THE LiNE. Xtina ended up going her own way and choosing Moses. “Just to know that I made my couch happy and she was really proud of me means the world to me,” Moses said backstage.
Team Blake
With only one pair of contestants left in the game, Blake told Naia Kete and Jordan Rager they would take on Jason Mraz’s “I’m Yours.” Even though the country superstar admitted that the tune would probably fit more to Naia, he said Jordan had a more of an opportunity “to blow people away.”
Later on, Blake’s decision to take Jordan out of his element appeared problematic as he revealed that he doesn’t harmonize very often. And mentor Miranda Lambert wasn’t completely impressed with Jordan’s take, admitting that he had a lot of work to do. “A lot of the work is not about singing. It’s about inside his heart and his mind,” she said. Kelly Clarkson served as Naia’s mentor and suggested that the singer take some vocal risks toward the end of the number.
Both contestants took a friendly approach to their battle as they spent much of the number circling each other with smiles. Even though Jordan lost some of his nerves, Naia shined the brightest with her vocal acrobats and styling, and because of that, all the judges, including Blake, sided with the neo-soul songstress.
Team Cee Lo
Cee Lo’s first pairing of the night exemplified how unpredictable some battles can get as he brought together James Massone and WADE. Upon telling the couple that they’d be battling it out to Cyndi Lauper’s “True Colors,” James showed some major hesitation and lack of confidence, saying the song is simply “not his style.”
Putting in some rehearsal time, the duo ended up bringing the judge to tears as they make their way through the 1986 classic. “Oh my God. It’s something about that song that makes me cry. I’m proud of y’all, man,” Cee Lo said. Even though the odds appeared in WADE’s corner, he struggled to stay on pitch and lacked the confidence displayed during rehearsal time. After some words from the judges, the vote was unanimous: James was sent to the next stage in the competition.
For the first time in the night, Justin Hopkins and Tony Vincent appeared content to battle it out over one of Cee Lo’s all-time favorite songs, Journey’s “Faithfully.”
In pairing up two very different singers, Justin admitted his fear over Tony’s range and Broadway background. Emotions got the best of Cee Lo once again during prep time, as he removed his sunglasses and wiped away some tears.
During mentoring time, Babyface came in to advise Tony and suggested the vocalist step up his strengths. “Tony’s a pro!” the R&B veteran admitted. Justin appeared to take more away from his one-on-one mentoring time with Cee Lo and Ne-Yo, as he attempted to mirror some of their notes.
Once the duo began their performance, it became clear that both contestants put a very different spin on the Journey classic. However, Cee Lo found Tony’s vocal styling more suitable in comparison to Justin’s rough twist and advanced him to the next round.
Team Adam
Mr. Maroon 5 wasted no time in announcing that Nicolle Galyon and Mathai would go head-to-head, covering Sara Bareilles’ “Love Song.” Surprised that the judge would pair such a contrast of vocalists together, Mathai appeared worried about how she would fare against Nicolle. And, as expected, Nicolle talked to Adam about beginning the song on the piano — only to be warned that her vocals shouldn’t be compromised because of the instrument.
“I’m really excited to rock out on the piano,” she said, adding, “It’s really an advantage. It makes me … me.”
With the guidance of Adam and mentor Robin Thicke, Nicolle feared Mathai’s abundance of attitude. Mentor Alanis Morissette was on hand to help out Mathai in techniques the young singer wasn’t familiar with. Rehearsal time shook things up for the duel, as Adam decided to eliminate Nicolle’s piano. Ultimately, it is Mathai who prevailed over Nicolle for stage presence and the skill that was emphasized during rehearsal time.
Up next for Adam’s team was a duel between Karla Davis and Orlando Napier. Despite his initial song pick (Hall & Oates’ “Rich Girl”), Karla and Orlando were relieved when Adam switched up his choice in favor of the Commodores’ “Easy.”
Leaving her nerves behind, Karla let go and used her 20-minute prep time to shake off reservations with Alanis Morissette as her mentor. Orlando benefited from his time with Robin Thicke by learning about note enunciation.
Orlando kicked off the performance with some strong notes and confidence, but Adam picked Karla as his winner, citing how much she’s blossomed throughout the competition.

‘It’s perfect for this private couple,’ one celebrity expert tells MTV News of B’s low-key NYC outing.
By Jocelyn Vena
<P>It was only a month ago that fans were wondering when the first images of new mom <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/knowles_beyonce/artist.jhtml">Beyoncé</a> might hit the Net. On Monday night, those questions were answered. Just four weeks after giving birth to daughter <a href="/news/articles/1677033/blue-ivy-beyonce-jay-z-leaves-hospital.jhtml">Blue Ivy</a>, B was back on the scene to celebrate hubby <a href="/news/articles/1678669/jay-z-carnegie-hall.jhtml">Jay-Z's first show at Carnegie Hall</a>. </P><P> </P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Jay-Z Brings The House Down At Carnegie Hall" id="vid:731725" width="240" height="211"></div><p> </P><P> </P><P>Wearing a form-fitting red dress, she hit up a post-show party held at Jay's 40/40 Club in New York City. And while <a href="http://rapfix.mtv.com/2012/02/07/beyonce-carnegie-hall-jay-z-show">Beyoncé could have premiered</a> her <a href="/news/articles/1678670/beyonce-post-baby-appearance-jay-z.jhtml">post-baby body</a> on a splashy red carpet, celebrity experts note that the more understated move is very B. </P><P> </P><P>"It's perfect for this private couple. She didn't make a big deal walking a red carpet at an award show or posing on the cover of a magazine," Huffington Post celebrity columnist Rob Shuter told MTV News on Tuesday (February 7). "Beyoncé made it as low-key an event as possible and at the same time plugged her husband's club." </P><P> </P><P><b><a href="http://rapfix.mtv.com/2012/02/08/beyonce-photos-carnegie-hall-night-two/">Check out more photos from B's night out!</a></b> </P><P> </P><P>For the appearance, Beyoncé was decked out in a fiery-red Temperley London dress, Christian Louboutin heels and an Alexander McQueen clutch. While that may sound very glam, another expert was surprised by just how modest the look actually was. </P><P> </P><P>"Beyoncé looks amazing in her first post-baby appearance. Even thought it made sense for her to make her debut last night to show her support for her husband and the charity his concert benefited, her outfit was fairly simple," celebrity editor <a href="http://gossipdavid.com" target="_blank">David Caplan</a> said. </P><P> </P><P>"I expected her to make her post-baby debut at a really glitzy event or awards show, like maybe the <a href="http://www.mtv.com/news/grammys">Grammys</a>, in a gorgeous gown and really steal the show. But clearly she wanted to be seen, since she even posted photos of herself right away on her website, which stars don't typically do — they'll just let the media pick up and run the photos." </P><P> </P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Celebrity Expert Believes Beyonce And Jay-Z Will Reveal Baby Photos Of Blue Ivy" id="vid:724228.id:1676907" width="240" height="211"></div><p> </P><P> </P><P>So, will B and Jay play it just as cool when it comes to releasing the first shot of their newborn? "It will be a [paparazzi] shot taken on the beach or when the couple is on vacation," Shuter predicted. "They won't reveal the baby to get a [magazine] cover like Bethenny [Frankel] or those other reality stars." </P><P> </P><P>Caplan also proposed that a baby photo will probably leak. "As for when will we see baby Blue, I wouldn't be surprised if some sort of grainy-looking paparazzi photo emerges," he said. "Those photographers are very crafty, even if Beyoncé and Jay-Z think they're doing all they can to keep Blue away from photographers. But ultimately, I think you can expect to see her baby photos in a magazine pictorial, and that will be Blue's introduction to the world. That's the real reveal people want to see." </P><P> </P><P><i>Are you looking forward to the first photos of Blue Ivy?
